AHEAD of the forthcoming general elections, leaders of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressives Congress, APC in Ethiope East local government area of Delta State, have promised to conduct themselves in a peaceful and orderly manner during and after the polls in the area.
The agreement was reached at the palace of the Ovie of Agbon Kingdom, HRM, Ogurimerime Ukori I, at Isiokolo, Headquarters of the local government on the occasion of the peace accord meeting organized by the council of traditional chiefs in Agbon.
Leaders of both political parties in attendance at the peace accord includes, Chief Frank Kokori, Chief Wilson Okpubigho, Chief Benard Edewor, Chief Mike Adiotomre, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO of Isiokolo division, the PDP House of Assembly candidate in the area, Chief Evance Ivwurie and a host of other party chieftains and supporters while candidates of the APC and SDP were unavoidably absent.
In his speech, the Ovie of Agbon kingdom, HRM, Ukori I, stated that the exercise which is the second since 2015, is being conveyed by the traditional council of the kingdom to ensure a hitch free election in the kingdom.
The monarch said, “We have key stakeholders of the various political parties in Ethiope East, hence the traditional council has deemed it necessary to bring all stakeholders of political parties to see that we do not experience untold happenings in the kingdom.
“Agbon kingdom is very much abreast and politically vibrant and what we are doing today is of national interest because of the key players in politics are from Agbon in Ethiope East and if all of us are one, we need not to be afraid.
“So, we must comport ourselves in a manner that is orderly and shun the politics of bitterness and personal aggrandizement because development cannot take place in the presence of chaos and violence”.
While commending the efforts of the monarch and the council of chiefs, Chief Kokori said, “I am glad we are sitting together as brothers and when we play politics, we should play it without bitterness so that when one needs something from the government, irrespective of our political differences, it will be done.
Chief Edewor Edewor on his part held that while we call for peace, our young men should desist from the destroying political billboards and posters rather they should sell their candidates and conduct themselves in an orderly manner”.
The PDP House of Assembly candidate, Hon Evance Ivwurie disclosed that the monarch of Agbon has display the role of a father towards his subjects saying, “With this meeting and peace accord today, lives and properties that would have been destroyed have just being saved by the singular act of our royal father and chiefs as they all vowed to maintain peace during and after the elections respectively”.
